With summer holidays fast approaching, it’s exciting to think about all the festive fun that will come your way. Refreshing pool swims, outdoor barbecues, an abundance of food and friends, and precious time with family.
Why not take some time to do a little advance planning for your lung health, and make your summer even more enjoyable?
We’ve rounded up a Holiday Health Checklist so that wherever you may be these holidays, you are on the front foot of your lung health.
Prepare your medicines
Make sure you have an adequate supply of your daily medicines as well as any emergency (flare-up) medicines on hand. Monitor your symptoms and know what you need to do if your condition worsens. Ask your healthcare team or specialist for their after-hours details.
Be aware of the weather and environmental hazards
The dry and warm weather at this time of year means there is an increased risk of bush fires. We encourage you to look after yourself and be aware of extra pollutants in the air when smoke descends in your town or city following bush fires or hazard reduction burning. You can find out more, including tips to prevent inhalation of smoke, here.
Travelling may take extra planning
Particularly if you are on oxygen therapy. Before you book a trip, always speak to your health professional to ask whether you are fit enough to travel as there may be some additional tests they want to undertake. Read more, here.
Make appointments to have any outstanding tests
Make sure you have your tests done and/or receive your results from your doctor before the holiday period so you can make sure your treatment plan is up-to-date.
Take it easy and relax
Holidays can be busy and sometimes stress can take hold. Remember, you don’t need to do everything on your to-do list in one day! Work out which tasks are a priority, and work through them one at a time, taking breaks to recover where needed to maximise your energy levels. It’s ok to ask for help from friends or family to lighten the load. Simple things like deep breathing exercises can also help you relax.
