The nation’s peak lung health body strongly supports the January 1 incoming ban on the importation of single-use vape products, which will save countless Australians from disease and addiction.
Lung Foundation Australia CEO Mark Brooke said the Federal Government’s announcement put Australia back on the leader board when it came to fighting for health over the interests of Big Tobacco.
“Lung Foundation Australia have been advocating for strong action on non-prescription vaping products since 2019. We know vaping products are harmful to health and are leading a new generation to nicotine addiction,” Mr Brooke said.
“As well as the import ban, accompanying laws preventing non-therapeutic vapes being advertised, sold or manufactured within our borders is a win for our young people who are being assailed by insidious marketing of these addictive devices wherever they turn.
“This action will prevent untold cases of lung damage and other serious health effects, reducing future pressures on the healthcare system by billions.
“Importantly, those who are working with their doctor or nurse practitioner on a long-term smoking cessation plan can still be prescribed vaping tools, and fill their script at a pharmacy.”
Mr Brooke said along with the concerning risks to lung health and the inclusion of nicotine, the ingredients within many single-use e-liquids include those commonly used in household disinfectant, petroleum, cosmetics, paint and even veterinary euthaniser.
“Getting this poison out of our school yards and off corner store shelves is a no-brainer.
“The focus now must be on educating and leading with empathy as we help people overcome vape and nicotine addiction without stigma.
“With the right support people can overcome vaping dependencies and take steps to look after their health and wellbeing.”
