Today Professor Christine Jenkins AM is being awarded both Life Governorship of Lung Foundation Australia, and the Governor-General Medallion for her dedicated leadership of Lung Foundation Australia.
Christine led Lung Foundation Australia as Chairperson for 7 years and is being awarded these two prestigious accolades at today’s Hope Research Fund lunch, becoming just the 6th person to be awarded Life Governorship of Lung Foundation Australia.
Prof Jenkins has a strong commitment to both respiratory practice and research, particularly in COPD and asthma.
A well-respected expert in respiratory medicine, Prof Jenkins wears many hats, including Head of the Respiratory Group at The George Institute for Global Health; recently retired Senior Staff Specialist in Thoracic Medicine at Concord Hospital; Clinical Professor and Head of Respiratory Discipline at University of Sydney; and Professor of Respiratory Medicine at UNSW Sydney.
Prof Jenkins has played a major role in advocacy and leadership for lung health in Australia and Internationally. She has led many clinical trials, and has chaired numerous government inquiries, guidelines and implementations to enhance resources, skills, capacity, and clinical outcomes in airway disease.
Under Prof Jenkins’ leadership, Lung Foundation Australia grew, flourished, and achieved many long-term objectives including launching the National Strategic Action Plan for Lung Conditions and the Lung Cancer Blueprint, and becoming the peak lung health advisory body to the Australian Government.

The Governor-General’s Medallion is bestowed by Patron His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC and recognises significant contributions to charities during the 2020 and 2021 pandemic years.
This award is in recognition of her volunteer expertise, generosity, and exceptional leadership during throughout the COVID-19 pandemic which saw Lung Foundation Australia not only weather the storm, but help more people than ever, grow funding, and strengthen our profile with government, community, donors and the wider public.
