We may never experience another year quite like this one. The coronavirus pandemic has made 2020 challenging on so many levels but, finally, there are reassuring signs that a brighter 2021 looms.
With summer and Christmas spirit in the air, it is time to unwind. Restrictions are lifting around the country, so catching up with family and friends may be back on the agenda. Whether you’re venturing out a little more or continuing to stay at home, looking after your physical and mental wellbeing remains crucial.
The “new normal” still means maintaining good hygiene and social distancing.
Here are a few handy tips for the festive season:
Be prepared
Plan ahead to ensure you have sufficient medications on hand throughout the Christmas period.
Consider asking your doctor for a written action plan, or review and update your existing action plan with your treating healthcare team to ensure that you can recognise any changes in your condition, and you know what actions to take.
Keep cool and hydrated
With temperatures rising and the storm season on our doorstep, people living with a lung condition may experience a flare-up of symptoms, including increased breathlessness. Stay hydrated and keep out of the sun as much as possible. With bushfires more likely at this time of the year, it’s also important to avoid exposure to smoke and haze wherever possible. Relax a little
Remember to prioritise your health and wellbeing during this time. With eased restrictions you may be travelling short or extended distances to spend time with family and friends. Assess how you’re feeling each night before deciding your plan for the next day. Avoid cramming your days too full of activities, so that you’re not left feeling fatigued and rundown. Space out your activities and allow for plenty of time-out and relaxation.
Keep a routine
It’s easy to let healthy diet and exercise habits fall by the wayside during the festive season. We have an at home exercise video series and a range of other resources to help you get motivated and set yourself some goals to work towards. Try to move your body each day and nourish it with healthy and enriched foods. Enjoy a few holiday treats while maintaining a healthy routine; remember, everything in moderation. Stay connected
No matter how you spend the holiday period, it is vital to stay connected with your loved ones.
If you can’t be with them, use technology such as video calling to keep in touch. It can help to schedule regular times to catch up, like you would if you were meeting in person, and space them out so you can look forward to speaking to someone each day.
