Training for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workers and Practitioners

Lung Cancer

Lung cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer amongst Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.¹ This comprehensive training package is designed to strengthen the capabilities of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workers and Practitioners, supporting their critical work in caring for and educating their communities around lung cancer prevention and management. The training package includes an eLearning module and an information and resource toolkit for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workers and Practitioners, aimed at supporting improved lung cancer outcomes within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

This training program has been developed with a panel of clinical experts including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workers and Practitioners, consumers, and clinicians with extensive experience in the specific healthcare contexts of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples living with, or at risk of lung cancer. 

Lung Cancer Training Package for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workers and Practitioners

Lung Foundation Australia has developed a free eLearning course to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workers and Practitioners in the delivery of evidence-based lung cancer care. The training focuses on the specific healthcare contexts of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples at risk of or living with lung cancer. The module will take approximately 45 minutes to complete.

By completing this course, learners can expect to:

  • Develop an understanding lung cancer in the context of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • Identify lung cancer incidence, survival and mortality rates for Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders
  • Understand the most common risk factors for lung cancer for Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders
  • Describe cultural factors contributing to trends in lung cancer incidence and mortality for Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders

Toolkit Components

The below tools can be downloaded and used when engaging with your people in the community:

  • Information sheets: Access PDFs for handouts covering risk factors, prevention strategies, and support services
  • Storyboard: Snapshot of how lung cancer impacts Australian First Nations Peoples. This can be printed and shared in storytelling to people in the community.
  • PowerPoint: A presentation with culturally appropriate graphics and key talking points allowing you to adapt to diverse cultural and educational settings. This can be downloaded for you to customise.
