Flu shots should be made free for all Australians ahead of warnings for horror season

Lung Foundation Australia is calling for the flu vaccine to be made free for all Australians no matter which State or Territory they live in, this World Immunisation Week (April 24-30), ahead of what experts are warning could be a horror flu season.

The call comes as new data shows Queensland is the only Australian state or territory to see an increase in flu vaccination compared to the same time last year, highlighting removing cost barriers has an immediate positive impact on uptake.

Lung Foundation Australia CEO Mark Brooke said keeping immunisations up to date would save lives and ease the burden on overcrowded hospitals this winter.

“This World Immunisation Week we are urging people to protect themselves and their loved ones,” Mr Brooke said.

“Please make sure you are up to date with vaccinations, speak to your doctor about flu vaccines, COVID boosters, and for those living with a lung disease, it’s important to also discuss the pneumococcal vaccine.

“Each day of World Immunisation Week Lung Foundation Australia will shine a light on the importance of vaccines for boosting our immune system response to five different respiratory infections – COVID-19, influenza, whooping cough, pneumococcal pneumonia and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

“Being vaccinated is your best protection against disease because it reduces your chances of getting seriously ill. If you are living with a lung condition, vaccination is particularly important.

Mr Brooke said Lung Foundation Australia was continuing to advocate for the flu vaccination to be made available free of charge for all Australians.

“We know cost of living pressures are already seeing some people forced to choose between looking after their health, and putting food on the table,” he said.

“Making the flu vaccine free for everyone means there’s no confusion about how much and who will be charged, which is a barrier for uptake at the moment.”
